7 Tips to Make Packing For Your Move Easier

Packing your stuff can be one of the most stressful parts of moving. With the right approach, though, you can pack like a pro and avoid fiascoes like lost or broken items. These seven tips will help you keep moving day as smooth and stress-free as possible.

1. Start early.
You don’t want to be frantically packing up your whole house on the morning of the move. Start packing your things at least a couple of weeks in advance. Stay organized and motivated by creating a to-do list and crossing off a few things every day.

2. Use moving boxes.
It’s smart to invest in boxes that are specifically made for moving, instead of using any old boxes you can find. Moving boxes are stronger than regular cardboard boxes, and they’re uniform in size, which will make packing the moving truck much easier.

3. Take the opportunity to declutter.
You probably have some stuff lying around that you never, ever use. Don’t waste your time and energy bringing clutter into your new home. Make a donation box or hold a yard sale for all the things you don’t want to bother packing.

4. Label everything clearly.
Labels will make your life much easier when it’s time to unpack everything and put it away. Make sure each of your boxes is labeled with its contents and which room of the new house it needs to go to. You can even use brightly colored stickers to color-code your boxes.

5. Find the right moving service for you.
Driving a U-Haul truck isn’t for everyone. If you’re nervous about moving by yourself, you may want to hire a professional moving service that will do the driving for you. On the other hand, if you’re on a budget and confident in your driving abilities, a do-it-yourself move might be the right choice for you.

6. Pack heavy items in small boxes.
When you buy your moving boxes, buy them in several different sizes, so that you can control the weight of each box. Big boxes are ideal for holding light items, but you don’t want to arrive at your new home and realize you’ve got to carry a huge box of books up the stairs.

7. Know what you’ll need to transport yourself.
Not all your possessions should get packed into the back of a moving truck. Fragile items might need to be transported with more care. It’s also best to transport valuables like electronics and jewelry yourself. And if there’s anything you might need close at hand during the move – like keys, ID, or legal documents – you’ll want to transport those yourself instead of packing them away in a box.
